In assemblies during the week commencing 21st October, Mr Brown, Headteacher continued our Personal Development theme of Health and Well-being by discussing the subject of empathy, understanding and helping others.

Mr Brown shared the life story of Arminka Helić who, after growing up in the former Yugoslavia, originally from what is now known as Bosnia and Herzegovina, arrived in the UK in 1992 as a refugee escaping to save her life when the Bosnian war broke out. Arminka, who arrived in the UK with nothing but the clothes she was wearing, went on to build a life studying and then working in the House of Commons Library before serving in politics as Special Adviser to the former Foreign Secretary William Hague. In 2014, Arminka was nominated to the House of Lords by David Cameron. She was created a Life Peer on 18 September 2014. Her life journey is quite incredible and through her own experience and the experience of her family it is no surprise that Arminka has devoted her life’s work to preventing war and the terrible atrocities that accompany it.

We see examples of our students empathising and helping others every day. Whether it's a student lending a hand to a friend who's going through a tough time or a group who have decided to organise a charity event for someone in need. Our Tanzanian exchange students are another fine example, they have been going above and beyond for the past year in order to change the lives of others. The world needs more people who can show empathy and offer help where they can, and we hope that we can continue to encourage Imberhorne students to develop their character to include these attributes.
